Flexible smart prepayment
solution for Ghana

Denmark, 12 January 2017

Collaborating with NURI Telecom, Kamstrup is set to deliver OMNIPOWER® smart meters with an online STS prepayment solution to Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The objective is to reduce energy and revenue losses and provide the best service for the consumers.

Following previous collaboration, NURI Telecom has placed an order of 27,000 new OMNIPOWER® smart meters with Kamstrup, a world-leading supplier of smart meters for energy and water. The meters are certified by the Standard Transfer Specification (STS) Association. Combining the benefits of regular offline STS prepayment with NURI Telecom’s AMR system, the solution is tailored to the needs of the African market, as it ensures full flexibility for both consumers and utility.

“The collaboration with Kamstrup enables us to offer our customers in Ghana a truly unique solution as it integrates the STS standard with our backend. After a successful pilot, we are now ready to roll out the solution on a larger scale,” Samuel Lee, Representative of NURI SA explains.
STS is the only globally accepted open standard for prepayment systems and ensures a secure transfer of prepayment tokens, to the benefit of both utility and consumers. With the STS module installed in their Kamstrup meter, consumers will be able to manage the prepayment even in the event of an unstable network connection, which can be an issue in rural areas.

The partnership between Kamstrup and NURI Telecom has developed over time through earlier projects, including a previous smart metering project in Ghana.

“It is a pleasure to work with NURI Telecom, and we are excited to be part of the journey towards reduced losses in Ghana. In addition, the fact that consumers can now manage the prepayment themselves is a fantastic service. In many ways, this is a special project to us.”

- Petrus Van Heerden, Country Manager at Kamstrup, South Africa.
Smart prepayment grants consumers full control of their consumption and spending and may motivate energy savings through increased awareness. For utilities, smart prepayment is an efficient means to eliminate both monetary losses and the time spent handling late or missing payments.
